Common questions
Everything you need to know about wāhiku — how it works, what's covered, and what you can do with an account.
Coverage
wāhiku covers the contiguous United States — from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. Alaska and Hawaii are not currently supported. If you visit from outside the US, you'll see an informational notice, but you can still explore by searching any US city, address, or landmark manually.
Yes — the current search radius cap is 250 miles from your starting point. This keeps results relevant for day trips and weekend road trips rather than cross-country browsing.
Search & results
Enter a location (or allow your browser to share it) and set a radius in miles. wāhiku finds all notable places within that straight-line distance. Use the category and review count filters to narrow results further. Click the driving time button on any place card to fetch a realistic driving estimate on demand.
You can filter results by one or more place types — parks, museums, restaurants, attractions, and more — directly from the Explore page. A minimum review count filter lets you surface well-reviewed spots and skip places with only a handful of ratings.
Driving times are fetched on demand — click the clock icon on any place card. Times are computed by OSRM, an open-source routing engine built on OpenStreetMap road data. They reflect typical road conditions and do not account for live traffic, road closures, or seasonal variations. Treat them as solid approximations, not real-time navigation.
Account & lists
No account required. You can search by location, adjust your radius, filter by category, browse the map, and fetch driving times — all without signing in.
With a free account you can bookmark places and organize them into named lists — like "Weekend Trips" or "Restaurants to Try". Your lists are private and persist across sessions so you never lose track of places you want to visit.
Sign up (it's free), then click the bookmark icon on any place card while browsing search results. You can create a new list on the spot or add the place to an existing one. All your lists live in the My Places section.
Data & pricing
Place information and ratings are sourced from TripAdvisor. Maps are rendered by Mapbox. Driving time estimates use OSRM and OpenStreetMap. wāhiku does not host or store any images — photography loads directly from content delivery networks.
wāhiku is completely free to use, with or without an account.
